Description:

LiveW is a Linux OS based on openSUSE (11.1 atm) which is targeted at warez users. It includes a range of programs and tools for downloading, running and viewing warez. It also has many things pre-installed and configured which you normally don't find in Linux distros such as Ubuntu, openSUSE, etc including Flash, PlayOnLinux, Wine, lots of codecs, Microsoft core fonts, working and pre-configured sub-pixel font rendering for LCD monitors etc. You don't have to remove Windows or install it in order to use, you can just boot from the CD (Live CD). Though if you like you can still easily install it to your harddrive after you booted the CD, and I would recommend doing so. Another thing worth noting is: no viruses, trojans, keyloggers, BSOD's whatsoever! However, you can still get Rick Roll'd.

Download Mirrors (Current version: 0.0.3 ALPHA):

More mirrors are welcome! If you uploaded the ISO to your server/VPS or a file host please share the link(s) in this topic, thanks :).

Changes since the last version:

  • Changed Firefox default theme to one that looks more like the Windows version.
  • Fixed issue in Firefox where it would not select the correct program for opening files.
  • Added some Firefox 'Scene Bookmarks' (More will be added later)
  • Pre-installed Firefox add-ons: AdBlock Plus, GreaseMonkey, KDST, Im4ge, IC Tools.
  • Added Ndiswrapper package.
  • Some other small config tweaks here and there.
This the last ALPHA release.

Known Issues:

  • In some cases the splash screen doesn't show while booting.
  • Sometimes the system reverts to the default openSUSE theme. If this should happen you can easliy change it again by going to Computer > Control Center > Appearance and changing the theme to LiveW 0.1.
  • Some of the openSUSE art, branding and icons hasn't been replace yet.
  • This is an ALPHA release, other issues and bugs should be expected.
Things not present yet that will be in the Final version:

  • Additional Firefox Add-ons, Bookmarks and Plugins.
  • Homebrew scene apps and some custom programs by me (for warez users).
  • A Peer-2-Peer client.
  • Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager.
  • Some other stuff which I can't think of now.

Minimum system requirements:
- Single core AMD Athlon64 or 64 bit Pentium 4 processor
- 256MB RAM, 512MB is highly recommended
- 3GB HDD (for installation)

I would personally also recommend a recent ATI or nVidia card.

Looks good except transmission > deluge, also wine doors would be nice to include, theme reminds me too much of mint, but other than that it looks ok

good choice in music.

I guess X vs Y is all about taste. I personally don't like Transmission that much. The main reason why I went for Deluge are its futures and it's pretty similar to uTorrent which is one of the most popular BitTorrent clients. I think Mint uses the same icon set but the controls and window decorations aren't the same :).

for the mint look i was referring to the menu / task bar, which looks suse/mint(ish), also afaik, deluge doesnt support DHT/PEX yet, which transmission will be soon, something to look at.

It does :). If you check the previous vid you'll see it works pretty well to, the torrent maxed out my connection in less than a minute.

Guess i just cant get over the fact it looks like something i would use on windows

i love linux and will give this a try for sure. oh well looks like i'm facing quadruple boot in here lol

just one correction, since Vista that windows just need a language pack to change OS language and not to buy a new DVD/license, although it only changes in a user account basis and not in the full OS, at least the Ultimate versions, the others i can't speak cause i've never used them.

Danny.M, I fully agree with Windows having some major issues, especially post XP versions. But I don't agree with the Linux cliché that if it has something to do with Windows or even looks like it it's bad/evil. Windows has a lot of good stuff to which made the OS big. And there's a reason why Windows is so popular. That's also one of the reasons why I'm behind Novell/openSUSE, because they understand that point. Ubuntu does to on some levels. Infact, Ubuntu is so popular because they adopt some of the Windows philosophy.

@PsyVisions: I stand corrected :)

I did, but I can't/won't reply to every suggestion. I will take note of them however. It's a good idea, but if it gets implemented it won't be anytime soon. First focus is just to get a working pre-configured Live CD release out there.

Rar files are supported out of the box, though not trough Winrar but File-Roller.
Users can install Winrar themselves if they think they need it.

Update:
The LiveW GNOME theme is now done.
I've decided to release it already so other Linux users can use it if they want to.
I would describe it as Vista + OS/X + Gnome feel
The theme requires Gnome and the Aurora Gtk Engine >= 1.5.1.
Credits go to the people who made the controls, icons, etc.
Everything is GPL'd so do with it what you want ;).

Download:
Code:

Installation from a shell:
Code:
sudo tar -zxvf /path/to/LiveW-theme-0.1.tar.gz -C /
^Then select it in Appearance Preferences.

Update 2:
Expect the first ALPHA to be ready for download in about a week B-).

Nope the default was a dull green one.
SJshah gave me the blue one at the beginning.

just made this:

like it?

can make it big, upto 5000x3000px ;)

And btw, the whole look n feel is very flexible.
If you like a dark look you can change it in a few clicks:

And those that don't like the default background an easily change it.
One thing to remember is that you can't develop for everyone's taste :).
