I just picked a random site offering free themes,

1st theme checked timthumb.php dated 2009, exploitable.

Just find one on a reputable site eg. wordpress.com

I knew there's a free plugin to scan theme files for possible exploits and referral/linkbacks possibly not wanted by the users.

You will get hack if you use nulled theme on your site. it is not safe

You can use it but you wont get support. There are several users of heatmap wordpress theme years ago, some just downloaded the theme from users who shared it. but they never get the access to the full support on their site.

Wordfence - WordPress Security Plugin plugin , you can use free service or purchase premium

i used a lot of nulled wp and no problem with that

You can use Theme Authenticity Check or TAC Wordpress plugin. If you like the theme though, better purchase it from the author to have free support and updates.

No! If the theme creators contact your web host, you can get your account suspended for it. It is also illegal.
