I refer to net.tutsplus.com often.. Its a great resource! Check that out..
 
Ya notepad is the best way for html,css,php editor, even you can gain some extra experience on it. By achieving error's you can make yourself much better programmer...
 
Notepad++ is the ultimate editor for many programming languages due to its awesome syntax highlighting , plus it has lot of plugins which comes very handy while editing.
 
sublime2 or sublime3
you can literaly do everything with it. Even inline-compiling.
you can install more plugins, like latex, ruby, java etc. (inkl. compile-calls)
syntax-highlighting out of the box. XML-tag parsing, autocompletion, multi-cursor etc.


i think it's much better than notepad++, but that's probably a question of taste :)
