When backlinking to get PR people say it is better if you get links from credible websites which usually has .edu or .org extensions. I am mostly focused into getting more niche related links as it produce better results in terms of traffic.
I try to increase my website's readership and daily visitors.

Whatever you do don't use spammy links like forum comments and one post blogs. There was a new google update last month that penalized all sites that use such links.
