There is one guideline that I always use when building a website.
Fuck Google (pardon my French). Build your website for PEOPLE. That's basically what Google wants anyway.
Write interesting and engaging articles and make sure that your content is what PEOPLE will want to read. Design your website so people will like it and want to click on other pages. You can't go wrong there. You won't need to worry about get backslapped by the big G, and it might even lead to you having a successful site. And hey, if people like your site, they'll start telling others about it or mention in on other websites.... and what do you get then? You guessed it - natural backlinks.

that's not necessarily true tooshy.

10 years ago people were writing their webpages for PEOPLE, not for search engines. because SEO wasn't a mainstream thing. and they got outranked. it just so happens that in this period of technology Google believes webpages need to be written for the people, but it's all about what Google deems "quality" SEO standards. As SEO standards have changed since the beginning of it's existence, they will change again. In what way? Who's to say...

But they definitely will change, and writing for people will not be what it's all about folks.
