if a user spends more time on the homepage (without going to other pages on the site), does that reduce the bounce rate?
 
I'm surprised nobody mentioned it yet.... but, with all the referral spam going on, your bounce rate likely isn't as bad as you think.

Check your referrals and see how many come from sketchy sources, create a segment in Google Analytics to filter them out, and presto, you will see your bounce rate actually isn't as bad as you thought.
 
bounce rate is the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page.
