Sharepoint with SQL for bid database?

Hi, We as part of procurement team have to decide whether we should have next database project in SharePoint with SQL offering web access to users. Or we should go for an out of the box solution for that. Any recommendations if SharePoint+SQL is a better choice for a medium to large scale database project where different entities have web access to data entry/queries.
