Shared Hosting vs VPS — When Should You Upgrade?

At what point do you think a website should move from shared hosting to a VPS?

For a small website, shared hosting is usually enough, but as traffic, database usage, background processes, and resource requirements increase, VPS can become more useful.

What factors do you normally consider before upgrading?

  • Monthly traffic
  • CPU usage
  • RAM usage
  • Database size
  • Number of websites
  • Server response time
  • Custom software requirements
  • Root access
Would you upgrade based on traffic alone, or would you wait until the hosting account starts reaching its resource limits?

I'd look at three things before upgrading: sustained CPU or RAM usage (not just spikes), how long pages wait on the database, and whether you need something shared hosting won't give you, like root access, a custom PHP or Node version, or background workers. Traffic alone is a weak signal, a well-cached site can handle a lot on shared, while a small site with heavy plugins can already struggle.
If you're not sure, watch the resource graphs for a week and compare response times at peak hours. If they stay flat, there's no rush.
