Blackhat Q: "nofollow" - does it worth to be used?

Few questions to experienced webmasters.

1. Is it good to have "nofollow" on external links of your website? Mr Happy said in other thread that "If you dont have a rel=nofollow search engines will follow the link and then discover the page is not to be indexed. This wastes the time search engines spend on your site and results in less pages indexed." Is that the only reason? And btw, do you agree with him?

2. Some people put "nofollow" to all links of their files on FS/Oron/etc.. What's the reason behind it?

Thank you.

Thank you.

because if those links didnt have nofollow then while the google bot is crawling your site it will leave to those sites, You dont want google bot to leave your site so fast eh?

Just think of GoogleBot be a customer who has come to your wine shop. Now, you'd like him to spend time in your shop and purchase many good wines rather than just 1-2 wine bottles.

So, for doing that you need to make your shop appealing, provide him a seat while you present the different wine bottles. This way he'd be more interested to buy more number of wines. Also, you'd be showing him good wines and not the common ones. I mean you'll try to convince him to buy the costly wines and not the cheap ones. So for doing this you may follow different stuffs and thats what like adding a "nofollow" tag to your website page.

Googlebot has arrived on your website. He sees many links on the page. He scans them and starts indexing. When the links come in his way, he checks whether its has any nofollow tag or not. If yes, then he'll not jump on that link and will continue indexing the same page. If it doesn't have a nofollow tag, then it'll jump on that link and start indexing from there.

The link would be to a not much important page, so getting that page indexed would be worthless. So to avoid that you add a "nofollow" tag.

Hope you understand.

Thank you for a good answers, I appreciate it.

The question which is still bothering me - should I put "nofollow" tag to all so called "download" links? Such as filesonic/oron links to the file which I want my visitors to download.

I'm a bit worried about 2 things:

1) is it good that google won't see it?
2) can it somehow decrease amount of files being downloaded?

^If you don't put nofollow on those download links, then google will leave your site to index the filesonic / fileserve / etc link and thus make your link exposed to google, which will make your links killed in a matter of moments... you wont like that to happen, so it's better to use the nofollow tag on your download links.

Interesting... so should i add a rel=nofollow tag to all my download links? Will that help my indexing rate? I thought i read somewhere that adding nofollow on download links wasn't that important.

@CloudShadow: Yes you should. Put nofollow to every external link that is not a link exchange link. Do everything to make search engine spiders crawl your site longer.

However the web is changing and soon nofollow relation tags will have very little relevance in google's alogarithm. They used to play a HUGE part in link relation, but not any more due to the web evolving amd social networking playing a much larger part in link sharing..

Yes, it's not that important... but it's necessary, coz it helps you to keep the Google bot busy and not leaving your site via your download links.

Does anyone know of a good wordpress plugin that will automatically add a nofollow tag on all external links in a post?

I'm using this one.
Code:
