you may try the nulled versions of some themes (if you are lucky enough to get those), otherwise, you gotta pay. It is true that you won't be able to test properly on the demo provided by the theme company.

Incorrect. Most WP themes are GPL licensed. Just download them from a site like gpldownloads.com and use them on your server.

Most are just the same as the ones bought from the developer. Some you can not use the demos, most you can.
