ICANN87: New AI Domain Names, or APIs That Finish the Site Setup?

With new gTLDs being discussed by registries and registrars at ICANN87 in Bali, AI projects could eventually get more naming options.

But picture an agent building a site: the code is ready, while buying the domain and setting the right DNS records still need separate steps. Better domain APIs could help close that gap using extensions already available.

For webmasters here, is the bigger opportunity a new AI-focused extension, or getting from a finished site to a working domain with less manual setup?

the api side imo, nobody really needs another ai extension. most registrar apis already handle dns fine, its the purchase + contact verification steps that are still clunky for anything automated

Contact verification is a good example. An AI agent can complete the registration in seconds, but if the customer has to verify their email or send documents, it still stalls. Clearer API status updates would tell agents exactly what’s needed next.
