How does Alexa ranking works?

Without updating my website content today my blog's "Alexa rank" improved a little. I am actually confused how alexa rank works.
If anyone has answer for this please share.

Alexa is reading ranking thru "Alexa Toolbar".As much as you get visits from visitors who has "Alexa Toolbar" instaled,your rank will grow up.

Alexa ranking is all depend on your website's traffic. If you have high traffic you have good alexa rankings and if you have low traffic you alexa rankings will also drop.
