You could do this with action script web side couldnt you? correct me if i am wrong.

You can do with jQuery I guess.

Place a div called "mask" above the link, with position absolute, then with jQuery:

$('.mask').click(function() {
      $(this).remove();
});

I think with this you can walk with your own steps
