I did a few traceroute on uploads, all ended up at *.portlane.net which is located in Sweden.
Looks like their legal entity is based in Hong Kong and the servers are located in Sweden.

@HostHK
because of speed and ping to asian users.

eg:

USA/canada => lot of free user hosts, vidzbeez, billionuploads, so USA users get better speed than other countries people even in peak hours because servers within their country.

Europe => plenty of filehosts, firedrive, file1.info

Asia => not able to find one :( espcially for india, singapore

The reason is probably the bandwidth cost in Asia. Asian bandwidth cost a heck of a lot more.

Wholesale rates in the US can be sub $1 per mbit. In HK (one of the cheapest areas in Asia), bandwidth typically cost about $50 and over per mbit. Other areas in Asia are considerably more expensive!

You may be thinking, 'hold on a second, but I've seen bw in HK for less', you may well have but it will be mostly US/EU routed traffic. The reason for the high cost is that ISPs in Asia charge each other an arm and a leg to connect with each other. And connectivity is managed/controlled by hundreds of jurisdictions.. It's a political minefield actually. Most of the major Asian countries have a lot of connectivity to US and Europe becuase they can't afford NOT to have it.

So it's not economical to do file hosting in Asia, unless the hosts use least cost routing which generally mean poor performance for some countries. Is that a problem for you?

Are you looking for high throughput or low latency or both? For file-hosting, surely you would only care about high throughput and latency wouldn't really be an issue?

Only location for asian filehost is singapore softlayer, bandwidth is cheap compared to other asian countries and good ping, hope some will create one there.

Softlayer have very good BW but they are not exactly cheap. They normally sell 'data transfer' rather than bandwidth and they typically count inbound traffic as well which can be 'expensive'. Unless things have changed, they also count server<->server traffic so if you have lots of servers locally with them it still uses your BW allowance. Still, they have a great intl. network and given the quality, pricing is good.

I know of a FileHost based in HK and there are some new connections being established which may make it economical to run file sharing but the latency will be poor. But bandwidth prices will be comparable to European providers so could be interesting.
