Cheap hosting is really a disaster ! One of my main money website goes down due to disk drive failure, the hosting provider has no backup for the server. Sadly, all of my recent work vanished in a moment, this is one of best lessons i learned so far.

So please stay away from cheap hosts as possible as you can ! Backup your data regularly, at least once a week if your site updates frequently.

A website owner should take the responsibility to backup their site continually themselves everytime they update it, not just periodically.

Well said. Unfortunately I think we all have to learn that the hard way one way or the other. It's best that it happens when you're on a cheap shared account. It's way worse if you've never had issues like this when you've progressed on to a larger operation.

I've had it happen to me too, I know it's frustrating, you live and you learn. Good advice, but unfortunately like I said above, it's just one of those things that you pretty much have to go through to truly understand.

Well said, @To0. The good news from this bad example is that it happened on a shared account. The purpose of this thread is to remind the webmaster pay more attention to their website data.Another thing to be careful, review your hosting account before paid day, or your entire site will be deleted, too.

Sorry to hear about your experience, we believe that you truly get what you pay for, this is very disturbing if a company was not using any sort of RAID and a single disk, but corners often get cut in some manner to offer low prices. We always recommend having access and taking your own off-site backups no matter what kind of service you have (eg. shared, VPS, Dedicated). We see people each day in the same situation, the good news is that now that you know this won't happen to you again.

Its really unfortunate that you had to face such a situation. Ideally your hosting provider should back up your data. But yes it would also be a good practice to back it up yourself just to avoid any disastrous situations in the future. Thanks for the warning. (y)
