if you have a good niche you don't need auto-blogs. if you go to a micro-niche like (how-to-heal-zip-behind-your-ear-on-sunny-days :P ) you need good, readable, unique content, on and off page seo and the clicks will come because it's targeted. Less traffic but better quality.
But, if you just for a wide niche like "heal zips" then you will need more content, more traffic movement to get some clicks. And nobody likes to write about zips so it's easier to get auto-content... less quality but still helps to get traffic.
Now, going ON Topic:
it's not easy starting from 0 to 100 on adsense, because it's ppc. Unless it's fakes clicks and you get caught sooner or later, first you need traffic and then you need people to click the ads.
do not aim to 100 autoblogs, start with one, with manual content and until you get the method. Then upgrade it!

You need a Basic concept for each autoblog
then you need source to grab data
then you need to fix the cronjob
All done then you are 95% ready to move for another blog with diff concept and source
rest 5% is for solving problems that will occur in future
like host , downtime, db crash , minor bugs etc etc
With a normal intelectual webmaster needs approx 7-10 days for each blog to reach that 95%
If you are smart enough you can move to next project early !
At the same time You need to make income to buy new domains and pay for hosting
so you need to focus on Ads management as well
If you are targetting on Adsense it's good but i prefer multiple income sources
So even 1 kicks you out , you don't care to kick it Back
What are other monetisation methods you can work out ?
it depends on what is you blog about ?
Auto blog doesn't mean you create it now and come back after 1yr to collect earnings
you need to follow and manage that at regular intervals depending upon how much it is complicated.
Other methods may include :
Url shortners ( Not interstial but slide and top banner pays well for large pageviews )
intext link ads ( infolinks , clicksor , kontera -- some more extra bucks )
Picture or photo ads ( brite pic or some other ads Legislate (not sure but there are many of these kind )
Popup and popunders (clicksor . bidvertiser )
CPM ads banner ( fidelity,adspilot,cpmstar,cpmbiz and many more )
Use combo... you can beat adsense earnings by twice or thrice for sure

you need to be a webmaster with php knowledge
