What makes someone return to an AI companion site?

I’ve been thinking about the difference between getting someone to try an AI companion site once and giving them a reason to return.

The first visit might be driven by curiosity, but that alone probably won’t build a habit. My guess is that the first conversation needs to feel easy to start, while later visits need enough variety to stay interesting.

For those who have worked on chat-based products: which signals would you look at to understand why users come back? Are repeat visits and conversation length enough, or would you focus on something else?

Customization can make an AI companion feel more personal, but too many choices before the first conversation might slow people down. I’m curious where others would draw that line.

Would you let a new user choose a few visible details and start chatting right away, or offer a more detailed setup from the beginning? I can see an argument for keeping the first step simple and letting people make changes later.

If you’ve tested onboarding for a chat product, what helped users get started?

AI companion sites can be difficult to explain quickly. Some homepages lead with features, while others focus on the experience a visitor can expect. Both can leave important questions unanswered.

If you had only the first screen to explain a conversational AI site, what would you show first? I’d want visitors to understand what they can customize, what happens when they start chatting, and whether the experience matches what they’re looking for.

I’m interested in how other webmasters balance clear information with a homepage that still feels welcoming.

Advertise REAL WOMEN LOCAL TO THEIR AREA.

The problem with AI is that it's fake and the men know it. The guys who will keep coming back are a very small niche.

Men want to believe that these are real women and they've got a chance to meet and fuck them in the real world.

id look at day 7 / day 30 return rate per signup cohort, conversation length alone can mislead, long chats can just mean the bot rambles. memory is probably the big one, if it remembers stuff from last session people come back, if it starts from zero every time they dont
