Making plugins

when making a plugin for other sites, how do I get the forum id number when the forum in question is using seo slugs instead of numbers? For example, instead of http://www.somesite.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2, where the id is obviously 2, the forum is labeled http://www.somesite.com/forum/applications-downloads

SharpLeech is outdated and barely used anymore. Development of this has been stopped.
