I guess 500 Error occurs mostly due to high CPU usage ?
(Correct me if I'm wrong)

Post how much resources your site uses and your vps/server specs

First, make sure you have all your vbulletin php files chmod to 644. If the're not, then chmod to 644. Also, like desiboy said, make sure .htaccess is set to 644 as well.

If all else fails, delete the current .htaccess file and upload the one that comes with vbulletin. Sometimes you may have a bad line in there that the server doesn't understand.
