If you have cPanel, there is this option called "Error logs" and once you click on it, it would tell you the errors. Alternatively, in your public_html there would be error_log or such and you could view the errors from there. Being quite some time since I hosted a site, can't really remember >.<

You can try to talk it out with them. I had a similar problem with my domain. Well, they locked my domain and wouldn't let me transfer due to DMCA. Initially they quoted me $120 and after talking it out, they agreed to let go at $60.
